From the Pacific Division to the Northwest Division, let’s continue looking into the July 1st moves of all the teams in the NHL.
Edmonton Oilers
2011-2012 By the Numbers:
—–> 5th in the division, missed the postseason.
—–> 19th in goals scored per game, 3rd in power play percentage.
—–> 23rd in goals allowed per game, 14th on the penalty kill.
Day 1 Additions:
LW — Ryan Smyth – The 17-year veteran will be back in Edmonton, and I have to think this is an awesome move for such a young club. Not only can Smyth score (46 points last season), but as a team leader, he is willing to do whatever is needed to win.
LW — Darcy Hordichuk – This guy won’t win a fantasy league for you, and he won’t put many big statistics on the board for the Oilers. The amount that he is used will be dependent on how much he contributes when he gets his chances.
Minnesota Wild
2011-2012 By the Numbers:
—–> 4th in the division, missed the postseason.
—–> 30th in goals scored per game, 27th in power play percentage.
—–> 13th in goals allowed per game, 15th on the penalty kill.
Day 1 Additions:
F — Zenon Konopka – Minnesota is obviously in desperate need of scoring assistance, so they could use some production from Konopka. Unfortunately, in seven seasons, he has averaged only about four points per season. Expect him to end up on a back line for the Wild.
C — Torrey Mitchell – Offensively, this is a guy that will provide a bit of help. I mean, he’s no Zach Parise or anything; but, it’s safe to say that he can pass the puck, score the puck and remain fairly consistent if he is healthy. Last season he had 19 points with the Sharks.
Colorado Avalanche
2011-2012 By the Numbers:
—–> 3rd in the division, missed the postseason.
—–> 24th in goals scored per game, 9th in power play percentage.
—–> 15th in goals allowed per game, 12th on the penalty kill.
Day 1 Additions:
D — Greg Zanon – This wasn’t the top choice as far as defenseman were concerned for the Avalanche, but he does bring decent ability to the table. It is likely that he will be used in a third-pairing and will remain solid while on the ice. Proof of this is his career rating of plus seven.
C — John Mitchell – Last season, he put together a respectable season with the Rangers, as he tallied five goals and 11 assists. His biggest value in Colorado will be his face-off ability when he is on with one of the lower lines.
RW — P.A. Parenteau – What an addition to an already dangerous Avalanche attack. He scored 67 points for the Islanders this past season, and will likely be paired with the dynamic Matt Duchene in Colorado. This is easily one of the best pickups of the opening day.
Calgary Flames
2011-2012 By the Numbers:
—–> 2nd in the division, missed the postseason.
—–> 24th in goals scored per game, 13th in power play percentage.
—–> 13th in goals allowed per game, 9th on the penalty kill.
Day 1 Additions:
None. The Flames said that they spoke with many players, but did not make any moves today. Prior to July 1st, Calgary resigned four players and added one other.
Vancouver Canucks
2011-2012 By the Numbers:
—–> 1st in the division, eliminated in the first round of the postseason.
—–> 5th in goals scored per game, 4th in power play percentage.
—–> 4th in goals allowed per game, 6th on the penalty kill.
Day 1 Additions:
D — Jason Garrison — After losing a couple of defenseman throughout the day, this was a very nice move for Vancouver. Garrison is coming off of a season in which he set career highs in goals (16), assists (17) and points (33), so he should be productive up north.
