Saturday’s Results
New York Rangers 2, Washington Capitals 3 (Series is TIED, 2-2)
Those Who Shined
1. Mike Green, Defenseman, Washington Capitals
If you haven’t already caught on over the first few weeks of the NHL playoffs, now’s the time to take note — any player can emerge as a difference-maker when the game is on the line. This was the case Saturday night, as Capitals’ defenseman Mike Green tallied his first point of the second round series in the form of a third period game-winning goal. He beat all-star Henrik Lundqvist on the only successful power play snipe from either team in the contest with less than six minutes remaining. The goal pushed Washington to a tie with the Rangers, which was crucial to avoid an elimination game at Madison Square Garden.
2. Artem Anisimov, Center, New York Rangers
Despite being on the wrong side of the final score, Artem Anisimov did all he could to propel the Rangers in game four. He scored New York’s first goal and then assisted the second to become the only player on either bench with two points at the buzzer. Also, this goal was already his second of the series with the Capitals, which is a major upgrade from round one after he was held without a tally in seven straight games. One other interesting note from this performance was that it was the first points Anisimov has scored on the road in any playoff contest — the definition of a young face stepping up in a tough environment.
3. Alex Ovechkin, Left Wing, Washington Capitals
All series, Alex Ovechkin has been putting pressure on Henrik Lundqvist, and it is showing up in the scorebook. Ovechkin scored the Capitals first goal Saturday night, which was his second in the last three games. He also threw four shots on goal (the most on his team), giving him 16 over the last three games. There are few players in the world that can be as productive as him when he’s playing well; so, this is exactly what Washington will hope to see as the series progresses. However, if you watched Ryan Henning’s video from earlier, you’ll know that Ovechkin could be in some trouble with the league after a brutal hit in the third period. The Capitals better hope he can play.
