Just hours after I complimented the Colorado Avalanche on their decision to acquire Steve Downie from Tampa Bay, they have made another couple of moves that they hope will solidify the offense for this season — and for those to come.
The Av’s sent forwards T.J. Galiardi and Daniel Winnik to the San Jose Sharks in return for Jamie McGinn and prospect forwards Mike Connolly and Michael Sgarbossa.
McGinn, a 23-year-old forward, has played in all 61 San Jose games this year, and has recorded 24 points along the way (12 goals, 12 assists). He also arrives with a positive one rating, and with just over 100 shots on target.
Coming with him are two very successful prospects. Sgarbossa has 84 points in 57 games with the Sudbury Wolves of the Ontario Hockey League, while Connolly has 30 points in 40 games for the Worcester Sharks of the American Hockey League.
The NHL Sharks received valuable offensive pieces as well. 23-year-old Galiardi and 26-year-old Winnik have combined for 32 points on the season, while appearing in most of the Av’s contests. However, the two have also combined for a negative 17 rating when on the ice. It will be interesting to see how San Jose works them into their offensive lines.
